Maine Coon Cats are one of the largest and most popular domesticated cat breed. They are known for their massive size and friendly personality. The average male Maine Coon Cat grows to be between 12-18 pounds and the female between 8-12 pounds give or take. Please understand that there is no way to predict how large your Maine Coon kitten will grow to be. We get asked this questions allot. Many people assume that because the parents are very large that their kitten will grow to be very large or because the parents are on the smaller side that their kitten will also be on the smaller side. Interestingly, my smaller sized and now retired stud produced many heavy children who surpassed his weight reaching 20 pounds by their first birthday. I share this example because I want people to understand that the parents size is not always indicative of their offspring's size, therefore there is no way to predict or guarantee that any kitten will reach any specific weight. These are living creatures and they grow and develop at their own pace and in the exact way that's right for them. In general the Maine Coon kittens are slow to mature and does not typically reach full physical maturation until they are between three to five years of age. Some start their growth phases early, while others may be late bloomers but in most cases they are slow to mature.
Maine Coon Cats are known to be not just big in size but also in personality which is what makes them such good kitty companions. They are well known for their friendly, cheerful, patient, affectionate, gentle and sweet tempered personalities. We get allot of messages from people requesting a kitten with a specific personality. This is an impossible request to meet. Like humans maine coon kittens are living creatures, each with their own unique identity and character. No two cats are the same and that's what makes them awesome! Regardless of typical temperament it takes time for their personality to fully mature and emerge which is why it is not possible for me to make any guarantees, predictions or give an accurate evaluation of any kittens personality at such a young age. I cannot guarantee that your kitten will have a specific personality but I can guarantee that we will do everything possible to ensure your kitten is well socialized.
Maine Coon Cats shed their hair just like any other cat breed. This shedding can occur at different rates. Some shed more than others or only during certain times of the year. Regardless of your maine coon cats shedding patterns it is very likely that their maine coon will require regular grooming to help reduce shedding, hairballs and matting. We recommend spending a little time each day brushing your maine coon kitten to remove any unwanted loose hair. Shoot for one to two times a week if your not able to brush your kitten daily. When your not brushing or in between brushing you can use a pair of deshedding gloves. These gloves are really great and super easy to use. Not only are they helpful in removing the loose hair off of your cat but they are an excellent way to remove fur from your furniture, cat tree, curtains, bedding and anywhere else around the home you tend to find hair. Follow the amazon link below if your interested in purchasing a pair of these gloves.
We are strongly opposed to declawing any cat and reserve our right to refuse placement of one of our maine coon kittens in any home where they may be subject to being declawed. Some people believe that declawing a cat is a harmless procedure with no consequences but fail to realize that this procedure is more than just a simple nail trim. The reality is the actual bone at the tip of the cats toes is removed. This is not only cruel but it can result in physical and behavioral problems. For these reasons our Maine Coons claws will remain fully intact. Please follow the link provided below to view a study done by the Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery to view its findings regarding the adverse affects declawing can have on your feline friend.
